BactiBlock® in PVC applications
PVC, also known as Polyvinyl chloride, is one of the most widely used plastics in the world with a broad range of long-life applications. Ideal for everything from construction, to healthcare, electronics, and tons of other applications, the use of PVC is incredibly common. This is due to the fact that PVC comes at a relatively low cost and it is wonderful for both its physical and mechanical properties.
Antimicrobial PVC in Healthcare
Among the most popular products in the medical and healthcare sectors, we could mention wall covering, flooring, surgical gloves & gowns, blood bags, IV bags & dialysis bags, catheters & tubings, oxygen masks, mattress covers…
Needless to say, that in hospitals, surgeries and any kind of medical environments, contaminated surfaces are important potential links in the transmission pathway of pathogens from one person to another. Microbes are able to colonize virtually any surface and can persist for weeks on materials commonly used in hospitals including stainless steel and various plastic polymers. MRSA, for instance, can persist on surfaces for more than six months. These surfaces can be a source of microbes with the potential to be transmitted without regular cleaning and disinfection.
By integrating BactiBlock® in these PVC products we will protect them from degradation, not only for aesthetic reasons, but also to reduce microbial burdens on product surfaces, reducing the risk of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
Antimicrobial PVC in Sports
PVC has come to play an integral role in sports, as it is strong, extremely durable, requires minimal maintenance, is fire resistant and most importantly, can be recycled multiple times without losing its key properties. Balls, mattresses, yoga mats and shoes are just some of the sports equipment made of PVC.
BactiBlock® can be integrated in any kind of PVC system: flexible, compound or plastisol. The use of BactiBlock increases a product’s lifespan, reduces stain and odor-causing microbes and prevents harmful microbes from residing on surfaces.
Antimicrobial PVC in Building and Construction
PVC is the most used plastic material for building and construction products such as pipes, cables, window profiles, flooring and roofing. PVC makes a major contribution to the quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of construction materials, as well as contributing to lower environmental impacts of completed projects.
BactiBlock® is commonly used in PVC interior finishes, and works to eliminate existing microorganisms and prevent new ones from populating. BactiBlock® remains active for the lifespan of a product.
